This evening, Walt Disney World ® announced that the popular Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a staple event, is being cancelled this year. Many of its hallmarks – stage shows, parades and fireworks – are unable to take place in this new, unprecedented environment. With that in mind, for the safety of Cast Members and guests, the difficult decision was made to cancel the event for this year. Additionally, Disney H2O Glow Nights, the nighttime special ticket event at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, will not take place for the remainder of 2020. Guests who have already bought tickets to these events will be assisted with refunds over the coming weeks.
There is still uncertainty around Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, but we will be sure to update you as we hear more information in the coming weeks.
Passover During Quarantine: Time for Hope!
Passover began this week and although it may be different this year as we celebrate it during a quarantine, it is still full of hope and promise!
We had our first Seder the other night, just my family. Then we will be having the second Seder (Conservative and Orthodox Jews generally host 2 seders, Reform Jews generally only host 1 along with those who live in Israel. This dates back to ancient days, the lunar calendar, and maybe a bit of confusion 🤣) My brother and sister-in-law will Zoom in with us.
This is the Haggadah, the book we use to tell the Passover story; from when the Jews were slaves in Egypt to their exodus to freedom. The word Haggadah literally means “the telling.” The silver tray is our Seder plate and holds the items that represent the holiday and are used during the Seder. Our Seder plate holds a special place in our family as it, along with many other important/valuable possessions, were actually returned to my grandmother after she survived the Holocaust. The koala bear, and a number of fun items in the next photo, are there as a way to keep kids interested. There are actually parts built into the Seder for kids specifically, but we tend to take it a bit farther.
These are the items on the Seder plate: Starting with the parsley and moving clockwise; parsley represents the spring time, the roasted egg and bone represent the sacrifice made, the brown balls (a Sephardic recipe), called charoset represent the mortar used when the Jews were slaves in Egypt, and the bitter herbs, called Maror, represents the bitter lives we had as slaves. The wine in the middle is for the prophet Elijah, who we hope will arrive each year. Our Matzah, the unleavened bread is actually in these little drawers that are below the items on the top.
My daughter got to lead the Seder this year! She was thrilled! She did a wonderful job (and don’t worry, that’s grape juice in her glass)
This is our matzah ball soup — very traditional Passover food! Ours is a bit different. My family are Sephardic Jews, which means that our ancestors came from Western Europe... for us, Holland. Many American Jews are Ashkenazi, which means their ancestors came from Eastern Europe. Our holidays and celebrations are the same, but a few of our recipes and traditions are different. While most people set forth to make very light and fluffy matzah balls, my family makes heavier, denser matzah balls. Still delicious (better if you ask me) but different than a lot of others.
Passover only happens once a year and lasts for 8 days. We always ask the question during the Seder, “what makes this night different from all others?” Most years we include things like the different foods and traditions during the holidays, that aren’t the same as we would do any other day of the year. My family and I always look forward to being together, enjoying yummy foods, and sharing in the fun and joy of the holiday — even if this year it meant that we had to do parts of that virtually.
I hope you enjoyed learning a bit about how we celebrate Passover!
Spreading Hope and Cheer during Social Distancing!
I am so excited to share something fun I put together over the past week. Just like all of you, we are home too! And also just like all of you, we are looking for creative ways to enjoy “social distancing”. After being inspired by a few other posts, I decided to put together a neighborhood scavenger hunt, Disney style! I asked all of our community to message me their addresses if they would like to participate, and which character or characters they would like to display in their yards, windows, or anywhere on their property! The night prior to the hunt, I compiled a list of all of the addresses. For the kids, I made a printable page they could check off all of the characters they could find.
On Sunday, we put on our ears, got in the car with a little picnic, turned on some Disney Parks music and cruised around looking for familiar friends. Their faces lit up with joy each time they spotted one. My girls had a blast and we loved waving to all of the neighbors as we drove past them!
As you can see from the pictures, it was a HUGE success. This was the second week in a row I had done one. Two weeks ago I did zoo animals. It’s been so wonderful watching the neighbors pull together for our children. Next week we’re doing an egg hunt. I’ve arranged for a very special visitor to stand in the front of the neighborhood to wave to the kids as they make their way around the neighborhood! Clue: he’s furry with big ears and a fluffy tail.
It’s a very unique time in our lives, but that can make a path for unique experiences as well. I’ve always been inspired by Fred Rogers insistence on finding the “helpers” during times of need. It’s in our nature as travel professionals to help our clients through every step of their journey. We’re still doing that, it’s just a different kind of journey right now. Have you done anything similar in your communities? Let us know! I would love some more ideas! We’re in this together!

Turtle Bay Resort
Why we like it: Respect and responsibility are as Hawaiian as surfing on the North Shore. Honor both here.
Turtle Bay Resort is the first resort in Oahu to cover its roofs in solar panels, this major initiative was only one of the many that has led to its STOKE certification from an organization whose rigorous criteria include 140 quantifiable measures and 320 indicators of surf–specific sustainability. TripAdvisor backed that up with accolades of their own, as has Hawaii Governor David Ige.
They couldn't be more well–deserved, with small changes like compact florescent bulbs and resort-wide recycling making big environmental impacts and donations of leftover food—80% of the produce is organic—to local organizations for the hungry or area farms making huge social waves. On the actual famous waves of this surfing destination, their participation in beach cleanups extend far beyond their own shores, and contributions to the Waste to Waves program that turns non–biodegradable Styrofoam—which you won't find on the resort—into surfboards. In the kitchen, cooking oil is turned into biofuel with the help of a nearby university. It also helps that it isa stunning resort!

El Dorado Royale, a Spa Resort, by Karisma
Why we like it: The only thing as green as the jungles of the Riviera Maya is this brand.
In the eyes of this Gourmet Inclusive® brand, "protecting our natural resources is more than just good taste." Every one of their Riviera Maya properties features produce harvested from their Rainforest Alliance–certified hydroponic greenhouse and surrounding orchard and Green Globe certification for admirable efforts in environmental protection and sustainability. El Dorado Royale, by Karisma is just one opulent way to enjoy the best signatures of this eco–friendly family of resorts, featuring accommodations equipped with energy–saving air conditioning units, LED lighting, motion sensors and solar panels to conserve energy even further. Recently they moved to all glass water bottles.
Like all the other El Dorado Spa Resorts & Hotels, Azul Hotels and Generations Resorts, this property also makes recycling very easy by installing special receptacles throughout the resorts and automatically using the oil your food is cooked in to power machines and reduce fossil fuel use. Each property features its own water treatment plant that purifies it and sends 85% back for landscape irrigation; the remainder is carefully returned to the environment. Also aqueous is the Kan–Kanan artificial reef, the largest privately funded attraction of its kind and an expansion of the Mesoamerican Reef, providing a home for local wildlife as opulent as the accommodations of El Dorado Royale, an initiative that goes hand in hand with their Marine Turtle Conservation Program.

Sunset at the Palms Resort & Spa
Why we like it: Who says treehouses are for children? Certainly not this upscale resort.
The very first hotel in the world to receive the UK's Green Globe certification for environmentally sustainable tourism, the tropical landscape Jamaica is so revered for is lovingly made a focal point here. It’s a secluded Balinese–style resort where no building is higher than the many namesake palm trees that fill the perimeter. Its open–air design and treehouse–style rooms bring you even closer to nature. A bamboo swim–up bar introduces another organic, sustainable material.
This luxurious all–inclusive keeps the hug from Mother Earth going with fruits and vegetables so locally sourced that some—like bananas and organic herbs—come straight from the resort itself. Anything not used is returned to the community; produce waste is readily given to local pig farmers to support their livestock. Glass and plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, aluminum and stainless steel are also conscientiously separated for recycling to create another full circle.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop Set to Reopen at Disney’s Beach Club Resort!
Bring out the spoons and get ready to return to one of the most popular restaurants at Walt Disney World® Resort! That’s right, Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is set to reopen at Disney’s Beach Club Resort on Dec. 26, 2019. The popular restaurant will return with those classic fan-favorite flavored sodas, malted milkshakes, hot-off-the-grill items, and of course the beloved Kitchen Sink.
When Beaches & Cream Soda Shop reopens, you will find even more room to enjoy those diner dishes and desserts. As part of an improved layout and enhanced experience, the restaurant has expanded to offer more space, inviting returning fans and first-timers more opportunities to scoop up a spot. In addition, a fresh new look embraces the timeless charm of an old-fashioned soda fountain. Throughout the playful eatery are subtle pops of color found within its beach-inspired design. Soft shades of teal, almond and rose adorn the walls and décor, along with accents of yellow and blue. Colorful, decorative balls reminiscent of beach balls are scattered throughout, while a collection of blue, amber, and pink beaded glass globes hang overhead highlighting the center of the space. At the counter, bistro-styled barstools are situated in front of scalloped aqua tiles and rose-colored banquettes line the tables along the wall. And prominently situated near the counter is a tall, bright jukebox, a staple within this turn-of-the-century soda fountain, featuring hits that span the decades. Framed antique mirrors and artwork of Mickey and friends at the beach complete the space.
In addition to all of these colorful transformations, you will find a number of new items sprinkled throughout the menu, including a Seared Salmon Filet Sandwich (with bacon aïoli, lettuce, and tomato on a house-baked multi-grain bun), a French Dip Sandwich (topped with crispy fried onions and swiss cheese and served on a toasted French roll), and a selection of loaded tots like the Sock Hop Topped with cheese sauce and green onions. There’s also a plant-based loaded tots with plant-based chili, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and green onions. Another plant-based option on the menu will be the Plant-Based Burger featuring a plant-based patty with plant-based mayonnaise and caramelized balsamic onion jam on a house-baked multi-grain bun.
And to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth, there are plenty of sweet treats on the menu, including the popular specialty shakes and sundaes as well as seasonal cheesecake and Old Fashion Apple Pie! And another new dessert is COOKIE FRIES! This yummy dish comes with marshmallow cream, chocolate, caramel, and strawberry dipping sauces and it’s not just delicious, it’s plant-based too! And of course, if Guests are up to the challenge, they can take on the famous Kitchen Sink sundae with scoops of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, and mint chocolate chip ice cream smothered in every topping available!
Reservations are now live for bookings starting on Dec. 26, 2019. Contact your Upon A Star Travel Advisors today to get your reservations made!
